About us

To Honour | To Remember | To Heal.

From Humble Beginnings to a Legacy of Care in Hawke's Bay

Established in 1878—just as Hastings was taking shape—Tong & Peryer began as S.T. Tong, Cabinetmaker and Undertaker. In those early days, craftsmanship meant building fine furniture by day and providing dignified farewells by night, all with a steady hand and heartfelt grace.

The business evolved when Charles Oswald “Ossie” Tong joined his father, Stephen Thomas Tong, and later partnered to form Tong & Peryer Ltd. Through wars, floods, and changing times, we’ve remained a pillar for Hawke’s Bay families, offering comfort and guidance with unwavering kindness.

Today, as part of the Propel Funeral Partners family—one of New Zealand’s leading funeral providers—we blend our rich heritage with modern care. Led by General Manager Terry Longley Jnr, our local team upholds the same values of empathy and availability, ensuring we’re here 24/7—rain or shine, with a listening ear and perhaps a comforting cuppa.

A glimpse into the past: We’ve preserved an old invoice from 1922 (thanks to Christine Stork of Hastings), detailing a funeral for just £15, 7s, 6d—complete with telephone numbers 121 (business) and 483 (private). How times have changed, yet our commitment to affordability and respect endures.
