The origins of Tong & Peryer Funeral Directors, date back to 1878. We pride ourselves on the professional caring service given to the people of Hawke’s Bay, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Tong & Peryer Funeral Directors is now part of Propel Funeral Partners. Propel is one of the largest providers of funeral-related services in New Zealand and Australia. Terry Longley Jnr will continue to oversee operations as the General Manager.
As old as Hastings itself
Tong & Peryer traces its origins back to 1878 when it began trading as S.T. Tong – Cabinetmaker & Undertaker. Its connections with Hastings and the surrounding district is as old as the township itself. Plans for the township of Hastings had only been laid out five years earlier.
Tong & Peryer has been serving the Hawke’s Bay community for over 140 years.
S. T. Tong was situated in Karamu Road, Hastings and as was customary in those times, the funeral directing aspect was run as a ‘sideline’ to the main activities of the cabinet-making firm.
We have kindly been given a copy of an old invoice (Thanks to Christine Stork – of Hastings), showing the costs for a funeral service held in 1922 of fifteen pounds, seven shillings, and sixpence, and the telephone number was 121 and private contact 483, how times change.
The new premises at Queen Street offer, private family lounges and visitation rooms to allow family and friends the opportunity to visit and pay the last respects in peaceful surroundings.
